Welcome!

I am Katie Nyberg, “The Iowa Baby Lady”, and have been serving hundreds of families in the Des Moines area since 2010. If you are looking for labor support, postpartum support, classes, or lactation support, this is the right place! In addition to myself, our team of Iowa Baby Ladies is ready to support you and your growing family too.

If you are interested in becoming a doula or new parent educator, please visit the CAPPA Trainings section using the menu. I’m glad you’re here!

Whether you’re looking for birth doula support or in-home, postpartum doula support, we are here to assist you in your journey to motherhood. Our doulas have supported hundreds of mothers, fathers, partners, spouses, siblings, and newborns through educational classes, events, and doula services.

Research shows that mothers who are professionally supported through birth and the first weeks postpartum are more likely to have less procedures and medications during birth, better start to breastfeeding, have more confidence in parenting, less postpartum mood/anxiety disorders, bond quicker with baby, and are overall happier. We would love to share more about how our support might be a good fit for your family!

Who are the families that our doulas work with?

  • Working mothers
  • Stay at home mothers
  • Mothers wanting epidurals
  • Mothers wanting pain medication-free births
  • First time mothers
  • Mothers birthing their second baby (or more!)
  • Mothers expecting multiples
  • Husbands/partners/spouses of mothers
  • ANY expecting or new parent!

WHAT DO WE OFFER?

The Iowa Baby Ladies offer many services for expecting and new parents. From prenatal care to birth support to postpartum home visits, we are here for you.

I started my professional doula career in 2010 but actually provided labor and postpartum support before that!

AND... my first job in high school was in an infant room in a daycare center!

While I am able to teach parents A LOT about babies, I think my favorite part of being a doula is helping them find their own confidence in caring for their baby.

This is one of the things new parents often struggle with the most. I like to remind families that it was only a few generations ago that we would be helping our neighbors, mothers, sisters, friends, etc. through their births and taking care of them after birth.

In today`s modern times, we are expected to do it all on our own. We often live far from family and many parents don`t have much experience with newborns when they come home from the hospital.

It`s ok to ask for help. Need help asking for help? Include your family when you complete your postpartum plan. Don`t have people to ask for help? Ask us. This is exactly what postpartum doulas do.

I am SO excited to share that I`ve added a NEW birth class option for local parents! I became an Evidence Based Birth® instructor last year and I`m starting with Birth Savvy 101 for expecting parents. This is an in-person class that is available the same nights as Express Birth Class and B.O.O.B. Camp!

Are you looking forward to having a baby, but worried about what it’s like to be a “patient” in the hospital system? Never fear, Savvy Birth 101 is here! The 1-hour Savvy Birth 101 class was developed by Evidence Based Birth® to give you the inside scoop on how to form the ultimate birth team, so when the time comes to bring your baby into the world you can find yourself at the center of respectful, evidence-based care.

As we enter March (yay!), our temperatures will differ from day to day, and sometimes even hour to hour. If you`re wondering how to dress your baby, consider using layers. Babies have a harder time regulating their body temperatures and because they are so little, the cold temps can become unsafe pretty quickly for them.

I think one of the worst things about being a small business is figuring out technology issues! I would much rather be a doula than an IT professional today.

That said, my website is temporarily down. I`m working with the professionals to get it back! 🙂

My nephew loves sloths so I`m going to use that for inspiration today. I am going to channel my inner-sloth and try to not stress that no one can get to my website. Ahhh!

Why would we produce relaxin in pregnancy? According to Britannica, "It was shown to cause the pelvic ligaments to relax, allowing the body to accommodate the strain of pregnancy and ease the passage of offspring through the birth canal."

Cool!
